Sutro Baths bathing suits. Italian porcelain muses. A carved wooden grizzly bear. A cowboy sculpture from Playland-at-the-Beach. An oil painting of San Francisco’s wealthy 24th mayor, Adolph Sutro.

These eclectic items, and more — roughly 60 items in total — were saved from the closure of San Francisco’s historic Cliff House restaurant for the posterity of the public this weekend.

SF Weekly – Saving the “Cliff House Collection”

“That didn’t sit well with a group of local organizers who believe the collection belongs to the public. Spearheaded by a community history nonprofit, the Western Neighborhoods Project, and two local fine art galleries, the effort, dubbed Save the Cliff House Collection, aims to raise enough money to buy some of the collection’s most culturally valuable objects at the auction and preserve them for the public for years to come. “

Special Announcement!

Minnesota Street Project Art Service logo

The Save the Cliff House Collection is excited to announce our partnership with Minnesota Street Project Art Services.

Half the battle of securing and preserving the targeted collection from the Cliff House is ensuring that its transport and storage is at and beyond museum quality standards. Minnesota Street Project Art Services stepping in with their generous donation of trained expertise paves the way significantly in two regards: that fundraising remains focused on the acquisition of more pieces, while also ensuring their required level of care and preservation are met.

This includes, but is not limited to the following scope of resources and actions donated: pack-out from the site after the auction, materials, transport, storage, and consultations conducted by their highly trained staff.
Minnesota Street Projects Art Services is a San Francisco based group that is mission minded and known for their philanthropic approach to sustaining our local art community. We are honored and excited to have their valuable support and talents join our effort!

Statement from Minnesota Street Project Art Services:

“Minnesota Street Project Art Services is excited for the opportunity to enact our mission of stewardship and support for the Bay Area arts and arts community through our partnership with Save the Cliff House Collection. We are exceedingly proud to donate our services and storage to the rescue of these significant works, which comprise a notable assemblage of Bay Area history and heritage.”

Funds needed to buy up historic building’s contents at auction

…“Both Muses are being auctioned off separately, creating the tragic possibility that they will be split up and never seen together again. Unless we can line up the chance to rescue them as the pair they were created to be,” the post reads. “We would love to find these wonderful San Francisco treasures a forever home and keep these ladies dazzling near the sea…”

Organizer Alexandra Mitchell of ACT Art Conservation said her work as a conservationist gives her a strong inherent interest in protecting pieces of heritage and history from being disassembled. The Cliff House’s preservation campaign, however, is what she calls an “angel project” — a pro bono effort to protect works she’s admired over the years as a city native.
